Description
Many people in the Zarasai district know Gediminas and Rita Kairiai, the woodcarvers and folk artists of Degučiai village who preserve traditional spoon-making, cooperage, joinery and toy-making. Visit Degučiai to discover a new hobby and meet interesting people. These certified national heritage craftspeople continue old carving traditions, introduce visitors to tools, types of wood and carving techniques, and offer the chance to carve something or buy a favourite piece. At their workshop you can see a spoon being carved. As Gediminas says, a spoon is one of the most important objects in a person's life, from birth to old age. Their spoons of many sizes, vegetable and bread boards, rolling pins, distaffs, walking sticks and masks are sold at fairs and markets, and many pieces travel abroad. You can book a workshop or buy carvings: colourful wooden toys, bird and horse whistles, miniature wooden coat-of-arms magnets representing the regional parks of the Zarasai district, spoons, spatulas, chopping boards, ladles, distaffs and more.
