Description
This circular route of almost 5 km introduces the historic town of Salakas and its surroundings. Follow the signs along a wooden walkway beside Lake Luodis to an observation tower, with panoramic lake views and opportunities to watch water and woodland birds. Information boards explain the history of Lake Luodis, the alluvial forest and its ecosystem, and the local birds. The route includes the family-friendly Gražutė Regional Park visitor centre, home to Vida Žilinskienė's ‘Maritime Museum’, nature exhibitions and an ethnographic display about the Salakas region. The signs lead to the interesting Tatar and old town cemeteries, the well-kept town centre and the memorial museum of A. Poderys, Salakas's first teacher. See Lithuania's tallest stone church, dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Salakas esker, a relic of the last ice age. You can begin at Salakas Campsite or the Gražutė Regional Park visitor centre.
