Description

This Neo-Baroque church was built in 1862 on one of the highest points in the city. The building has a rectangular floor plan, with two towers rising from a wide pediment; the church contains three altars. It is one of the oldest brick buildings in Zarasai. The building has a rectangular floor plan and a single nave. On the main façade, two towers rise from a wide, undulating pediment. The upper sections of the four-story towers are octagonal, with Baroque-style spires, spherical finials, and openwork crosses; the openings in the facade and towers vary in size and shape. The church has three altars, characterized by classical order. They are adorned with artificial marble columns, fluted and richly ornamented architraves, and their pediments. Above the high altar is a semicircular window in which hangs a unique painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary, “Mary with the Child,” with a Latin inscription attesting that the painting was brought from Vilnius and hung here to commemorate its miraculous salvation from the fire that ravaged the capital in 1610.
