Description
In 1839, an Orthodox church named Gospodnia was built in the town of Zarasai, then known as Novoaleksandrovsk. This church housed a number of icons painted in the Greek style, and after the Basilian monks of Ilūkste moved out of the Suviekas chapel around 1842, all of its property, including the icon of the Mother of God of Częstochowa with silver embellishments, was transferred to the Orthodox church in Novoaleksandrovsk. In 1869, during a visit to the town by Governor-General A. Potapov, it was decided to build a new stone house of prayer next to the old wooden church, and in 1885, the faithful themselves moved the old wooden church to the newly designated site of the Orthodox cemetery (now Valstiečių Street) and consecrated it in the name of All Saints.
