Description

The church was completed on 16 January 1787 by Pranciškus Mohlis, a Livonian land judge who owned the Imbradas manor, as a private manor chapel with a crypt for the founders' remains, and was consecrated in July of the same year. As the population of the surrounding villages grew, at the very end of the 18th century the chapel was transferred to the Zarasai parish and became its filial church. According to an 1873 inventory, the chapel's thatched roof, floors, ceilings and bell tower had rotted and repairs were urgently needed. In 1890–1891 the deteriorating Imbradas chapel was repaired and partly reconstructed at their own expense by the brothers Jonas and Pranciškus Prušokas, landowners of Romancai. The Imbradas house of prayer was renovated once more in the interwar period, when the building acquired its present appearance. Imbradas became a separate parish only in the first half of the 20th century, when, after Lithuania restored its independence, the Imbradas rural district administration, a post office, police and a Riflemen's unit were established here. The interior of the Imbradas Church of the Crucified Jesus has a single nave; the organ loft rests on two columns, and the church combines features of Neoclassicism and folk architecture. The main altar is adorned with a 19th-century sculpture of the Crucified Christ. The church holds other works of art as well: a painting of St Jerome from the late 18th century and 19th-century paintings “St John the Evangelist”, “Christ in the Garden of Olives” and “St Martin and the Beggar”. A Neo-Baroque side altar and Classicist candlesticks cast by V. Feldman in 1811 have also survived.
