Description
The Liaudiškiai hillfort was built on the highest part of a separate long hill and was used from the 1st millennium BC until approximately the 10th century AD. Remains of an ancient settlement have been found on the hillfort plateau and at its north-eastern and south-western foot. The hillfort has been damaged by ploughing and by German soldiers, who during the First World War dug trench lines in its upper part and built a concrete bunker. In the surviving cultural layer on the plateau and at the north-eastern and south-western foot, fragments of handmade striated, smooth and rough-surfaced pottery, iron slag and animal bones were found, which suggests that, like other hillforts of the Striated Pottery culture, this one was used for quite a long time – from the 1st millennium BC until approximately the 10th century AD, when it was finally abandoned.
