Description

The founder of the Antalieptė Local History Museum was Algimantas Žilėnas. The museum was established in very modest premises of the Antalieptė secondary school – a small room where local history items began to be collected. In 1976, when the Antalieptė agricultural technical college was closed, it became possible to expand the museum premises. In August 2003, after the summer holidays, it was discovered that the museum had been robbed. The vandals who wrecked it were never found. The remaining items were piled up in a garage, and the museum ceased to exist. Urged by local historians, especially Vytautas Indrašius, the school management and history teacher Danutė Mickevičiūtė took up its revival. In 2006, a Lithuanian language classroom was set aside to display the exhibits of the former museum. In 2011, the Antalieptė school was closed. In 2012, the exhibits were moved to the Antalieptė Multifunctional Centre. The collection now numbers over 300 items, all of which are carefully inventoried and catalogued.
