Description

A large Jewish community lived in Antalieptė from as early as the first half of the 18th century. A synagogue and a Jewish school are mentioned here in 1747, and according to 1764 data, 142 Jews lived in Antalieptė, including the town itself and 8 taverns in the surrounding area. The site for the cemetery was chosen according to Jewish burial customs: on a hill or its slope, separated from the settlement by a river or lake, and at least 50 cubits (25 metres) from the nearest house, with graves oriented towards Jerusalem. The old Jewish cemetery of Antalieptė contains surviving gravestones dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The cemetery is listed in the Register of Cultural Property and protected by the state.
