Description

The Maniuliškiai hillfort was built on a promontory of high ground about 0.5 km north-west of the village of Maniuliškiai, about 0.7 km south-east of Lake Kumpuolis and about 0.8 km south-west of the junction of the Aleksandravėlė–Suviekas and Kumpuoliai–Antazavė roads. In 1933 the hillfort was investigated by Petras Tarasenka (1892–1962), a retired colonel of the Lithuanian army and an archaeologist. Excavating an area of 28 m², he found a distinct cultural layer up to 1.2 m thick on the elongated plateau, containing an iron pin, a bone awl, a clay spindle whorl, a weight and striated, rough-surfaced and polished pottery, and a settlement was located at the foot of the hillfort. The research established that the hillfort was used for quite a long time, from the 1st millennium BC until the 11th–12th centuries, when it was finally abandoned.
